Protecting Your High School Athlete

Helping Young Athletes Stay Strong All Season

Parenting today is a balancing act. Teaching young athletes to listen to their bodies and take smart precautions can help keep the season fun, healthy and on the field—not on the sidelines.

Youth sports offer so many benefits. They’re one of the best ways to get kids off screens and into healthy movement that supports both physical and mental well-being.

But practice, games, school, repeat can leave young athletes vulnerable to overuse injuries caused by repetitive motion and strain. Travel teams and year-round sports are a happy place for many teens and tweens, but there’s no denying the toll they can take on developing bodies.

At Danform Shoes, we believe a few proactive steps can reduce the risk of overuse injuries and keep your athlete happy and in the game all season long.

Start with the right support.

Sport-specific shoes, like soccer cleats or basketball shoes, don’t always provide the arch support every athlete needs. Even a great athletic shoe may not provide the right support in the right place for your child’s foot.

Many young athletes come to Danform with recommendations from their physical therapists for supportive orthotics like Superfeet footbeds.

Orthotics can provide additional arch support and help promote healthy alignment and biomechanics from the feet up. That foundation can influence how the knees hips and back move, too.

Make Post-Practice Recovery Part of the Routine

Recovery shoes and sandals give hardworking feet cushioning and support after hours of running, jumping and cutting. Arch support gives tired feet a break when practice or game time ends.  Once an afterthought, stretching and recovery are now essential parts of a smart training routine.

Easy-on styles like Birkenstock, KANE and other recovery shoe favorites are perfect for slipping into after practice, games and tournaments. A little TLC goes a long way.

Pay Attention to Pain

Most importantly, if your child complains of pain, it’s important to have it evaluated by a medical professional before a more serious injury develops. Checking in with your school’s athletic trainer or a trusted physical therapist can provide knowledgeable advice and help keep smaller issues from becoming larger, lasting problems.

We're lucky to raise our kids in an era when healthy footwear is actually on-trend.
